Ngā Aho Whakaari (NAW) are calling for short film scripts from Māori writers. We are looking for key Māori creative teams, that is the Producer, Director and Writer. The writer can also be the director. If you have a team in mind – great, otherwise NAW can work with you to get a strong team together.

Applications are contestable. Ngā Aho Whakaari are looking for production teams to complete a short film and to develop a social media presence upon which to raise match funding, to be eligible to apply.

Ideally teams will have a Producer, Director, Writer, Editor, although the writer may be writers who also are the director. Each team must have a plan to build capacity by engaging a first time Writer, Producer OR Director, or alternately have a mentor programme for up to 2 trainees.

Each of the films are to include Te Reo Māori as suits the film . At least one of the films will contain high te reo content. Ideally 100% te reo Maori.

Draft Scripts, Directors Vision and Plan and budget are required as part of the team proposal.

Funding available: $15k x 3 Shorts – 3 x $10k short films shoot and 3 x $5k toward Post production.

This funding is to support Māori aspirations in the NZ film industry and teams are encouraged to engage Māori personnel across the board.

To support our creative teams Ngā Aho Whakaari will be holding workshops. A writer’s workshop with Tim Worrall (Head High), short film producer’s workshop with Ainsley Gardiner (Two Cars One Night & Boy), a ‘writers & directors working with actors’ workshop and NZ Film Commission workshop will be coming soon. Applications for Ngā Aho Shorts can come from any part of Aotearoa.
