Ngā Aho Whakaari calls for nominations to represent Māori Broadcasting on Te Mātāwai the new organisation established under Te Ture mō te Reo Māori 2016 (The Māori Language Act 2016) to lead revitalisation of te reo Māori.

Ngā Aho Whakaari is looking for candidates to put forward to represent Media.

The knowledge, skills, and experience needed for Te Mātāwai include:  Māori language proficiency, management, Māori language revitalisation, Māori culture, governance, central government operations, community development.

The nominated person would need to be a strong advocate for Māori Media and represent Ngā Aho Whakaari and Whakarūrūhau.

The nominations need to be at Ngā Aho Whakaari by Friday 27th May 2016.   All persons nominated must agree to their nomination in writing.

The purpose of the Act is:

  1. to affirm the status of the Māori language as:
  2. the indigenous language of New Zealand;
  3. a taonga of iwi and Māori;

iii. a language valued by the nation;

  1. an official language of New Zealand;
  2. to provide means to support and revitalise the Māori language.

Te Mātāwai is an independent statutory entity to provide leadership on behalf of iwi and Māori in their role as kaitiaki of the Māori language.

It provides for Te Mātāwai and the Crown to develop Māori language strategies to support the revitalisation of the Māori language, including by promoting an increase in the number of people speaking the Māori language and improving their fluency in that language.

Te Mātāwai adjusts the functions of Te Taura Whiri, Te Māngai Pāho, the Māori Television Service, and disestablishes Te Pūtahi Paoho.

Te Mātāwai’s board will consist of 13 members, including 7 iwi representatives, as well as four clusters of Education, Community and Urban as well as Media.

Māori Media will be represented by Te Whakaruruhau o ngā Reo Irirangi Māori o Aotearoa and Ngā Aho Whakaari.
